Another growing Chinese New Year trend is the demand for at-home entertainment, given the “new normal” of staying in. Mahjong, in particular, has seen a jump in popularity, with sales of automated mahjong machines growing 181% YoY. Pre-prepped Chinese New Year Eve meals and festive pet costumes have also risen in popularity during this festive time.

Staycations have also become increasingly popular this Spring Festival. From Jan. 25-31, bookings for CNY stays at high-end hotels soared 90% month-over-month on travel-services platform Fliggy while bookings for homestays increased by 83%. Meanwhile, on Amap, more than 80% of users have been booking their Spring Festival hotel stays in their cities of residence or in nearby areas.
